When I got married I would grocery shop like I had a family of ten. My husband would come home from work and ask me if we are having guests over because I made so much food! It took me some time to adjust cooking for only two because I’ve been cooking for 15 for quite some time :). About one year ago I started implementing this cool system that not only cut my grocery spending in more than half, it helps me control leftovers. It’s simple really. I started doing meal planning for a week. Once a week I sit down with a cup of coffee in one hand and pen and paper in another and start brainstorming…
- Plan your meals for a week (you should know about how much your family consumes so count that in :)).
- Check your refrigerator and cupboard for what you already have and write down a shopping list of what you need.
- Go shopping!… and remember you made a list for a reason so don’t buy ham just because you think you might need it. Stick to what you wrote on that list…and never go grocery shopping hungry!
